For SEO experts and web developers, 2017 is set to be the year of mobile. While the significance of mobile certainly isn’t new to the SEO game, this year there will be no more room for excuses as Google gives more ranking power to mobile-friendly sites than ever before.
The past few years Google has made several changes to accommodate the growing traffic from mobile devices. As always, their main priority is to improve the user experience, and with the majority of users now searching on a mobile device rather than a desktop computer, it makes sense to force websites to refine their content and usability for this channel. Back in April of 2015, Google implemented its mobile-friendly ranking algorithm that gives a boost to mobile-friendly pages in mobile search results. Shortly after, they launched the Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) project, which provides a guideline for websites to create mobile pages that load as quickly as possible.
More recently, Google has begun testing their new mobile-first index, which will primarily look at the mobile version of a website when determining page rank. In addition, Google rolled out their new interstitials penalty just this month. Now websites that have mobile-intrusive pop-ups on the first page a user sees after getting to a site from mobile search results will be lowered in rankings.
With all the focus on mobile, it’s more crucial now than ever to ensure you’re your website is completely mobile-friendly. Google considers a number of things when determining this, including how fast pages load, the size of the text and how close touch elements are to each other.
